New Hymn Search: "Stewardship of Creation"

The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada sponsors annual hymn competitions (several results of which are found in recent hymnals, including PsH 524, "Hope of the World," and PsH 606, "O God of Every Nation"). This year the search for new hymns is cosponsored by the Hymn Society and the Au Sauble Institute of Environmental Studies, a Christian institute whose mission is to bring healing and wholeness to the biosphere and the whole of creation. "Stewardship of Creation" is the theme.

The deadline for entries is December 1, 1993. Judges will be Emily R. Brink, Grand Rapids, MI; Carl P Daw, Jr., Storrs, CT; and Sylvia Dunstan, Toronto, Canada. For details, contact: The Hymn Society, Box 30854, Fort Worth, TX 76129.

Hymn Concertatos and Hymn Festivals

Two resources for planning hymn festivals are available from the Hymn Society: first, sample copies of hymn festival programs on a wide range of themes, and second, a listing of hymn concertatos.

A hymn concertato is a congregational hymn arranged for the alternate singing of stanzas by congregation and choir. It often includes instrumental parts and varied organ accompaniments. A fourteen-page list of over 300 concertatos currently in print from many publishers is available from the Hymn Society headquarters. Send $4.00 to cover photocopying and postage costs to: The Hymn Society, PQ Box 30854, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX 76129.

Another Worship Resource

Selah Publishing Company has just released its first issue of Music in Worship, a newsletter for church musicians. This fall/winter 1992 issue contains brief articles by Austin Lovelace, Hal H. Hopson, Alfred V Fedak, Sue Mitchell-Wallace, and Carl P Daw on such subjects as playing and choosing hymns, rehearsing choirs, and the lectionary.

Music in Worship will be published three times a year and sent without charge to Selah's customers; to be placed on the mailing list, contact Selah Publishing Co., 58 Pearl St., PQ Box 3037, Kingston, NY 12401,1-800-852-6172.
