In preparation for the reading of scripture and the sermon, consider offering this prayer of illumination, asking God to speak. It is offered two different ways: for a single voice or as a responsorial prayer.
For a Single Voice
You spoke, creator God, in the beginning.
Your words and the Word brought all things into being.
You spoke, loving God, through Jesus, the Word who dwelt among us.
You spoke, living God, and released your Spirit to work in and through us.
God, speak to us now as we read and reflect on these words of scripture.
Amen.

Responsorially
God, speak to us now.
Creating God, you spoke.
In the beginning your words brought order into the chaos.
Loving God, you spoke.
You sent Jesus, your son, the Word, to dwell with us.
Powerful God, you spoke.
You released your Spirit to work in and through us.
Enlightening and living God, you still speak.
Speak to us now through these words, we pray.
Amen.
