Baptism of Our Lord

Baptism of Our Lord

Baptism of Our Lord Sunday marks a profound theological event where the full picture of the Trinity is made manifest at one time–when God the Father gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his son, Jesus Christ. Marking this event found in Matthew 3:17 can happen on the first Sunday after Epiphany (January 6). By marking this event in Jesus’ life at the beginning of his ministry, we commemorate this important time in Jesus’ ministry, remember our own baptisms, and hear the voice of God speaking clearly. In this remembrance we, as baptized children of God, hear of God’s love for us and are commissioned to continue the ministry that Jesus started. Romans 6:3–4 says: "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life."
