This article contains a list of contemporary songs around the theme of creation. God, creator of all, is praised through creation, which reveals God’s wisdom, power, and artistry. Humanity, made in God’s image, is called to honor one another and steward the earth with care. In worship, we thank God for creation’s beauty and abundance, lament its harm, and join its praise and sorrow. We pray for fruitful seasons and faithful stewardship, seeking to honor our God who so loves this world.
Here are eight worship services on the theme of creation. The general idea for the worship services was originally inspired by a seminar with Tim Brown on his book The Seven Pillars of Creation, although the worship services developed in a somewhat different direction than the book. For each service, you are encouraged to adapt the prayers of the people to fit the needs of your congregation. Here’s a summary of the themes and Scripture passages for each of the eight services.
I pray that the echoes of Sunday’s praises will continue into Eastertide and be the background against which we look at this world. And I pray that our worship will make room for both our laments and our praises, acknowledging that they can exist simultaneously in our hearts and our songs. As individuals and worshiping communities spend time this week considering the created world as part of Earth day, it seems particularly appropriate to offer these alternative stanzas to “This Is My Father’s World.”
