In the sacraments the triune God is active, and while what exactly happens during the sacraments is a mystery, we know they are given to us as signs of grace and seals of God’s promise. In baptism God declares the individual being baptised (baptizand) is now a part of the covenantal family of God. In the water the Holy Spirit is present and active, the water itself symbolizing the washing away of sin, our unity with Christ in both his death and resurrection, our oneness with fellow believers, and our hope in the future resurrection. Baptism doesn’t mark the end of a faith journey but the beginning as we live as baptized children of God.
It is also appropriate to remember our baptism and claim the promises that God made to us regularly in worship. This can be done in connection with confession and assurance, as part of the act of sending, or in planned baptismal renewal liturgies. These baptismal remembrances are a testament to the fact that God has remained faithful to the promises God made at our baptism.
