When the congregation of St. John’s Church in Bradford West Gwillimbury, Ontario, celebrated two hundred years of Presbyterian presence in their area, they returned to their roots and used prayers of the 16th C. English Reformer, John Bradford, in their worship. This is one of the prayers of intercession.

O eternal, almighty, and most merciful God,
who has revealed yourself to humanity,
        not only by the handy-work of this world,
                and deliverance out of Egypt,
        but also (which is the greatest of all)
                by the sending of your only-begotten Son,
                our Lord Jesus Christ,
                into this valley of misery,
        and by the gifts of your Holy Spirit
                with which you have adorned your church;
we humbly ask you to open your gracious ears to our complaints
and send down your help and aid,
        not so much for our sake,
        as for the glory of your holy name.
